- 1 bowl basmati rice,
- 1/2 bowl arhar dal,
- 2 tbsp mustard oil or desi ghee,
- Pinch hing,
- 1/4 tsp Jeera,
- 3 garlic cloves grated,
- 1 med sized onion sliced,
- 4 dry red chilli broken into halves,
- 1/2 tsp garlic paste,
- 1/4 tsp ginger paste,
- 1/2 tsp haldi powder,
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder,
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder,
- to taste, Salt
- 1 tsp sugar,
Steps to make to make Arhar Dal Khichdi
- Firstly take a mixing bowl, add rice & dal, mix it.



- Wash it & soak it in water for 30 minutes, keep aside.

- Take a pressure cooker, add oil or ghee, heat it. (I have used oil).
- Add hing & zeera, let it splutter.



- Now add garlic grated, saute it till light brown.


- Add onion & dry red chilli, stir fry it until golden brown.



- Strain the khichdi, add in the masala, stir fry it for 5 minutes.



- Moderate the flame,add ginger garlic paste, stir it till rawness is released.

- Add haldi & red chilli powder, increase the flame,,stir fry it for 7 minutes.


- Add garam masala powder now, stir fry it till grains aur separated.


- Now add 2 1/2 cup water. Add salt & sugar. This is not a mushy khichdi.

- Place the lid, give 4 whistles at high flame, lower the flame, cook it for 5 minutes.

- Switch off the flame, allow it to depressurize. Open the lid after 5 minutes.

- Take out in a serving dish, garnish it with onion browns.

- Have it with desi ghee, papad, salad, dahi & achaar.
- Make onion browns by frying thinly sliced onion in ghee (quantity is variable).
